Why has canfitpro created a register of exercise fitness professionals?

As the largest provider of education in the Canadian fitness industry, we want to take the lead to increase the creditability of our profession by creating an inclusive and transparent place where Canadians can verify the credentials of fitness professionals.

What is a register?

A register is a collective list, or record, of individual pieces of information, in this case individual fitness professionals.

What is the difference between a register and a directory?

A directory is a listing of information that is not verified, a register verifies the information that is displayed.

Why should I use repscanada?

This allows you to ensure that your current or potential employee’s credentials have been verified. It also allows you to verify recertification for individual employees on a regular basis without having to request hard copies of certifications. This is important for risk management as uncertified staff increases your liability exposure.

How do I use the register?

The register was created as a simple tool for you to verify your employee’s certification status. In order to verify an employee’s certification, simply enter their name into the search field and locate them in the listing.

Why can’t I find one of my employees?

A person may not appear on repscanada for a few reasons:

  • They have not yet enrolled with repscanada
  • They have requested that their name be removed
  • They have been removed from repscanada due to noncompliance
I found my employee but there are no credentials listed, what does this mean?

A persons credentials may not appears on repscanada for a variety of reasons:

  • The individual does not hold any credentials
  • The individual has not submitted a copy of their certification for verification
  • The individual holds credentials from an organization that is not recognized by repscanada
What does “verified” mean?

Verified means that the individual has submitted a copy of their credential(s) to repscanada and they have been confirmed as a certification, training, degree/diploma that is current and/or completed through a recognized education provider. Verified certifications will be indicated with a “ü”

An “X” or “?” appears in the verified column next to the credential, what does that mean?

If there is an “X” next to the credential it indicates that the certification is expired.

repscanada requires certifications to be renewable and therefore verification includes confirmation that the certification has been renewed as per the education providers’ terms of renewal. The “X” will remain until an up-to-date copy of the certification is submitted to repscanada.

If a “?” appears next to the credential it indicates that this credential has yet to be verified by repscanada.

What does “meets standards” mean?

repscanada has outlined a comprehensive set of standards as they apply to both personal training and group fitness certifications. A certification that receives a “ü” under “meets standards” has been reviewed by repscanada and is indicated as either meeting or exceeding the standards in the areas of knowledge, competencies and skills required to perform job roles.

Personal trainers assist clients in developing and maintaining their health and fitness, achieve their potential, and enhance their quality of life. They are qualified to give safe and effective training sessions to individuals or small groups. What are the standards for group fitness certifications?

Group fitness instructors assist participants in developing and maintaining their health and fitness, achieve their potential, and enhance their quality of life. They are qualified to teach safe and effective classes to music. Where did the standards for repscanada come from?

The standards set by repscanada were based on both Canadian and international standards for exercise and fitness professionals. Personal training and group fitness certifications that meet or exceeds these standards are indicates as such on the register

My employees’ certification does not meet standards; does that mean I should not hire them?

The standards set forth by repscanada have been mapped out according to the knowledge, competencies and skills required to perform job roles. If a certification is indicated as not meeting standards it does not mean that it is not good quality education, only that it does not have one or more of the articles outlined in the repscanada standards. A certification not meeting standards is not indicative of the individuals’ merits or abilities, only the comparison of their certification to the register’s standards.

What are the requirements to stay on repscanada?

An individuals' position on repscanada is maintained annually. In addition to providing up to date copies of displayed certifications for verification, repscanada enrollees are required to renew their position annually. As per the terms and conditions agreed to upon enrollment on repscanada individuals are also expected to abide by the repscanada Code of Ethics at all times.

What is the repscanada Code of Ethics?

The Code of Ethics is a document created by repscanada outlining the expectations of an individual within the fitness industry outlining professional conduct expected of them as a repscanada enrollee. To see repscanada Code of Ethics please click here

How do I report someone for noncompliance with the Code of Ethics?

To report an individual to repscanada for noncompliance with the Code of Ethics or terms and conditions set forth by repscanada please submit a written report to info@repscanada.com for review.
