Why has canfitpro created a register of exercise and fitness professionals?

As the largest provider of education in the Canadian fitness industry, we want to take the lead to increase the creditability of our profession by creating an inclusive and transparent place where Canadians can verify the credentials of fitness professionals.

What is a register?

A register is a collective list, or record, of individual pieces of information, in this case individual fitness professionals.

What is the difference between a register and a directory?

A directory is a listing of information that is not verified, a register verifies the information that is displayed.

Why should I include myself on repscanada?

repscanada provides a unique opportunity for you to display your credentials all in one place for employers and consumers alike to verify them. Your position on the register demonstrates your professionalism and dedication to the fitness industry, your clients and class participants.

I am a canfitpro professional member and want to be on the register – what do I do?

If you are a professional member with canfitpro your information is automatically showcased on the register at no additional cost, and no additional action is required from you. If you hold a current canfitpro certification it will be automatically be displayed and verified.

What if I am a canfitpro professional member and do not want to be on the register?

Option 1: Log into your member profile and locate the opt-out button available “update my profile”. Removal from the register will take 1 business week. For more information on why you would want to be on the register, please click here.
Option 2: If for some reason you cannot access your member profile, please contact repscanada at info@repscanada.com to have your name removed from the register. Removal from the register will take 1 business week. For more information on why you would want to be on the register, please click here

I am not currently a member of canfitpro; can I be on the register?

repscanada enrollment is open to anyone who wishes to display their credentials within the fitness industry. Enrolment will be open as of July 3, 2012.

What is the cost of being on repscanada?

As a canfitpro member your enrollment on repscanada is included in your professional membership.

What is the difference between a canfitpro membership and repscanada enrollment?

For inclusion on repscanada you must either be a canfitpro member or an enrollee on repscanada. A canfitpro membership is required for canfitpro certification and in addition to a space on repscanada, includes a variety of member benefits. To get more information on your canfitpro membership please click here. If you are not a canfitpro member, you are able to enroll on repscanada - enrollment does not include a canfitpro membership.

How do I submit my credentials for verification?

Credentials can be submitted for verification by email at verification@repscanada.com. Your enrollment on the register includes 3 complimentary verifications.

What other credentials am I able to display on the register?

repscanada recognizes various education providers for inclusion on the register. You will be able to submit:

Certifications – a personal training or group fitness certification from a recognized education provider, please click here to view accepted certifications

Trainings – specialty training programs or certifications other than personal training or group fitness certifications, please click here to view accepted trainings

Degree/Diploma – designation earned from a recognized post secondary institution, please click here to view accepted institutions.

What is the difference between certifications and trainings?

repscanada qualifies a certification as being a foundational personal trainer or group fitness certification that is renewable, matches the core competencies as laid out by repscanada and have an evaluation of skills consisting of a theory and/or practical assessment. Trainings are qualified as any education earned other than a foundational personal trainer or group fitness certification. Trainings are required to be a minimum of eight (8) hours in length and run as a live course.

My credential or education provider is not listed as recognized, why is that?
  • Education providers or specific credentials will not be listed as recognized because:
  • The credential did not meet the criteria outlined by repscanada to be recognized as a certification, training or degree/diploma
  • The education provider has not applied to repscanada to be recognized
  • The education provider or credential is still under review by repscanada for inclusion
What do I do when my credential or education provider is not listed as recognized?

Please contact repscanada at info@repscanada.com or your education provider directly to determine why it is not listed as recognized.

What are the requirements to keep my information on repscanada?

Your position on repscanada is maintained annually. Your certification expiry date will be noted and in order to maintain your certification as verified you will need to submit a copy of your renewed certification to repscanada by email at verification@repscanada.com for re-verification. As per the terms and conditions agreed to upon enrollment on repscanada you are also expected to abide by the repscanada Code of Ethics at all times.

How do I update my personal information?

You may update your personal information at anytime on your canfitpro Member Profile or by contacting repscanada at info@repscanada.com.

Can I change my listed credentials?

Yes, you will be able to adjust your listed credentials from your Member Profile (see “How do I submit my credentials for verification” for instructions)

What does “verified” mean?

Verified means that you have submitted a copy of your credential(s) to repscanada and they have been confirmed as a certification, training, degree/diploma that is current and/or completed through a recognized education provider. Verified certifications will be indicated with a checkmark.

I have an “X” or “?” in the verified column next to my credential, what does that mean?

If you have an “X” next to your credential it indicates that your certification is expired. repscanada requires certifications to be renewable and therefore verification includes confirmation that the certification has been renewed as per the education providers’ terms of renewal.  If you have renewed the indicated certification please submit a copy to repscanada by email at verification@repscanada.com for re-verification.

If you have a “?” next to your credential it indicates that this credential has yet to be verified by repscanada. Please submit a copy of your credential to repscanada by email at verification@repscanada.com for verification as soon as possible.

What does “meets standards” mean?

repscanada has outlined a comprehensive set of standards as they apply to both personal training and group fitness certifications. A certification that receives a checkmark under “meets standards” has been reviewed by repscanada and is indicated as either meeting or exceeding the standards in the areas of knowledge, competencies and skills required to perform job roles.

What are the standards for personal trainer certifications?

Personal trainers assist clients in developing and maintaining their health and fitness, achieve their potential, and enhance their quality of life. They are qualified to give safe and effective training sessions to individuals or small groups. What are the standards for group fitness certifications?

Group fitness instructors assist participants in developing and maintaining their health and fitness, achieve their potential, and enhance their quality of life. They are qualified to teach safe and effective classes to music. Where did the standards for repscanada come from?

The standards set by repscanada were based on both Canadian and international standards for exercise and fitness professionals. Personal training and group fitness cerifications that meet or exceeds these standards are indicates as such on the register.

Why do I have to abide by a code of ethics?

A code of ethics aids in increasing not only the creditability but the professionalism of the fitness industry. By offering mapping for standards and ethical conduct, repscanada helps give piece of mind to employers and consumers that the fitness professional they are working with has agreed to uphold the expectations of conduct set forth by repscanada.

Can repscanada remove me from the register?

Yes, you may be removed due to a violation of the code of ethics, and potentially for other reasons.
